Day 27 - Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

\
This is the day that Joan has been asking about since the beginning of the trip - the day that would take a ride on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.  We got up early to catch the 8:30 a.m. train to Silverton (an old mining town located about 45 miles north of Durango high in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado).

The views were great, especially the high line section of the track when the train was on the edge of a 400 ft. drop to the Animas River.

It was also fun to get to see a working steam engine, particularly since Joan's great grandfather (William Gaskins) was a fireman and locomotive engineer for similar engines.

I enjoyed having somebody else do the driving through the mountains.

Silverton was an interesting mining town perched at about 9000 ft above sea level.  It was interesting to imagine what the town would have been like at the turn of the century when most of the mines in the area were in operation.

When we got back to the campground, Joan went the pool (even though it was not particularly warm outside) and made some friends close to her age.

Another great day and another great place.
